Growing up in Plano, I had never really heard of walkability. Plano is similar to many other suburbs around the area, and caters to the car-centric lifestyle of commuters. I decided to move to the Knox-Henderson area of Dallas around two years ago because I was intrigued by the idea of walking to my favorite shops and restaurants. Walking to different places around my home near Henderson Avenue also comes with the added bonus of observing the historic architecture of the neighborhood. My home is sandwiched in between The Vickery Place Conservation District which displays many Craftsman and Prairie Style homes, and The Cochran Heights Preservation District which boasts many Dilbeck inspired abodes. The dedication to the neighborhood can be easily seen when walking and admiring the improvements that homeowners have made to their properties. East Dallas also has an emergence of modern townhouses that are a direct result of the popularity and growing density of the area. This combination of modern and historic architecture make the neighborhood a very unique place to call home.
Areas to grab food or shop while on foot in East Dallas include, Henderson Avenue, Greenville Avenue, Skillman/Live Oak, and The Lakewood Shopping Center based around Gaston Avenue and Abrams Road. I'm happy to help anyone who is curious in learning more about where to eat, where to drink, where to shop, and where to live in the area.
