Consider using this safety checklist below to properly prepare yourself when you list your home. You must always know how to keep your home safe while it's open to the public! I, personally, have my clients' best interest at heart so here are my top 10 anti-burglary tips:
Maintain your property. If your home looks unkempt and/or abandoned, thieves may think no one lives there and make your house an easy target. Make sure to cut the grass, clear your walkways of debris and remove any remaining holiday decor in a timely manner so it looks like the home is still occupied.
Know your neighbors. And I mean, really get to know them. Invite them in your house, bring them cookies, introduce yourself before you put your house on the market. If you can, have your listing agent stop by and say hello as well. This way- they know who should/should not be in your house during the listing period and better determine who may be a threat.
Assess your home’s vulnerability.Walk to the front of your house and think, "How would a burglar try to get in? How would I get in if I were locked out?" Then solve the issues that first come to mind.
Respect the power of lighting.Criminals don't want to be seen. A home that is well-lit during the nighttime will usually be a deterrent to burglars. It's smart to It’s smart to buy a light automation tool that you can access from your phone/computer to turn off/on lights each day. Leaving your exterior lights on ALL the time will show that you may be gone for a long period of time, so keep that in the back of your mind as well.
Use technology to make your home look occupied. Smart-home technology has made it easier to make it appear that you're home, even when you're not. You can install a remote-controlled system for music, blinds, Systems that remotely control lighting, music, and appliances such as a thermostat can help you achieve this. Though not considered smart-home tech, simple lamp timing devices available at hardware stores are also good for this purpose.
Lock your doors.It’s unbelievable of how many people think they can leave their doors unlocked during the day because they "think" their neighborhood is safe. In 30 percent of burglaries, the criminals access the home through an unlocked door; 34 percent of burglars use the front door to get inside; and 22 percent use the back door, according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report.
Reinforce your locks. Make sure you have a solid door frame with a good lock. I would recommend double-cylinder deadbolts because they require a key to get in and out.
Blare the sirens. Criminals are in and out of a home within 5 minutes. Usually police can not respond this quickly - so I would suggest an external siren in order for your neighbors and witnesses to go outside or look through their windows to see what is going on. This also tends to scare off the burglars.
Invest in surveillance cameras. I would recommend homeowners to install a device called Ring, a doorbell with video surveillance capability that allows homeowners to view what’s outside their door on their smartphone. According to a study,the burglary rate dropped by 55 percent when homeowners installed.
Mark your valuables and record details.Use invisible-ink pens or engravers to mark identifying information (driver’s license or state ID numbers) on items. Log serial numbers and take photos of your belongings.
