Texas in general has a very rich history that I think we can all agree that we’re all more than a little proud to tell people about the place that we call home. Aside from the cowboy boots, brisket and sweet tea there’s a lot more to Texas than meets the eye. Here’s twenty one things you probably didn’t know about the DFW.

  • 7- Eleven was founded right here in Dallas in 1927 by a Southland Ice Company employee. 7- Eleven is now the largest chain in the world!

  • Do you remember Kevin from the hit show, The Office?! (If not, then bless your heart) Turns out he’s an SMU alum! #ponyup

  • The Dallas Cowboys that we know and love were originally known as The Dallas Steers.

  • Love margaritas with your chips and queso?! The margarita machines that we depend on to keep us from melting over the summer were invented right here in Dallas.

  • The Texas Rangers (no, not the MLB team) are the oldest statewide law enforcement organization in the US. And no, Chuck Norris had nothing to do with this.

  • The Dallas Public Library houses an original copy of the Declaration of Independence.

  • Turns out German chocolate cake isn’t all that German after all. The recipe was created by an American and then popularized after it was published by The Dallas Morning Star in 1957. Yum!

  • Dallas is Vanilla Ice’s hometown. Ice ice baby….don’t act like you don’t know all the words!

  • Southern Methodist University (SMU) is Dallas’ oldest college.

  • Fort Worth is home to the world’s second longest lasting light bulb.

  • The Texas Star Ferris Wheel at the Texas State Fair is the second largest Ferris Wheel in the world. Everything really is bigger in Texas!

  • The Dallas Cowboys introduced the first ever cheerleading team to the NFL. How ‘bout them Cowboys?!

  • Long before we had the Texas Rangers, you could cheer on Dallas’ first pro baseball team The Hams. Houston wasn’t much better…their first pro baseball team was known as The Babies.

  • DFW airport is larger than the island of Manhattan.

  • DFW is the number one tourist destination in all of Texas.

  • The entire Statue of Liberty could fit into the AT&T stadium.

  • Dallas’ Woodrow Wilson High School is the only public high school to ever produce two Heisman Trophy Winners. Thank goodness for those Friday Night Lights!

  • Dallas is the only city to have ever hosted a Super Bowl, World Series game, and an NBA finals game in the same year.

  • After robberies, Butch Cassidy would meet up with his wild crew in Fort Worth.

  • The first ever microchip was created right here in the DFW in one of Texas Instrument’s labs. You’re welcome world

  • That purple dinosaur that you either grew up loving to watch or got tired of watching thanks to your kids is a Dallas native. Yep, Barney was created by a Dallas native.
