4 Things To Keep In Mind When Buying Your First Home

Buying your first home can be overwhelming, but never fear! Follow these 4 guidelines to make home ownership a more enjoyable experience.

  • Its expensive! Owning a home comes with new and sometimes unexpected fees for first time home buyers. Make sure you calculate mortgage, real estate taxes, insurance premiums, utilities, and maintenance (say goodbye to maintenance requests to the landlord!) .

  • Leave room to grow! Starter homes mean they are not your forever home; but plan on sticking around for 5 to 7 years. If adding members to your family is part of the plan, make sure you are using your money to purchase space and not upgrades. It will be much easier to buy new countertops later than to add on extra room.

  • Keep it low maintenance! Buying a home is pricey enough. The last thing you need to worry about is pouring money into a fixer-upper. Try to find a home that is less than 10 years old to avoid paying for expensive repairs early on. Adding a home warranty is also a good idea to keep maintenance costs low.

  • Location, Location, Location! You may find the home of your dreams for a steal out in the country, but you will start to love it a lot less on that daily commute. Make sure to take proximity to your favorite places and drive time into consideration before signing on the dotted line.

There will always be unexpected hiccups in the home buying process, but hopefully with these tips in mind, you will find the starter home that is right for you!
